By stimulating the circulation of thinking that is now
disperse, silenced and pushed aside by the mass media
that support domination, this contest should contribute
to the structuring of an active system of ideas in the
social sciences and culture that shall promote change
and resistance to hegemonic power.
Rules
1. Authors of any nationality may submit unpublished
essays in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish (either
written originally in or translated into any of these
languages) which have not been contracted for
publication
or won any prizes in other contests.
2. Each essay must be between 20 and 40 pages long, 30
lines per page, double-spaced.
3. Each author may submit only one essay.
4. All competing essays should be sent by e-mail to
contracorriente@icl.cult.cu before March 1, 2004, as an
attached file, using a Microsoft Word format. Each
author should submit only one copy, in one message,
clearly identified with his name and address and
including a curriculum vitae and a list of consulted
books.
5. An international jury headed by Emir Sader (Brazil)
and also composed of Elmar Altvater (Germany), Samir
Amin (Egypt), Fredric Jameson (the United States),
Fernando Martínez Heredia (Cuba), Ana Esther Ceceña
(Mexico) and Immanuel Wallerstein (the United States)
will award three prizes—of 1500 Euro, 1000 Euro and 500
Euro, for first, second and third places respectively.
The jury will also award as many honorable mentions as
it deems pertinent, but these will not include a
monetary prize.
6. A selection of the competing essays will be publish
as a book. The Cuban Book Institute (ICL) will retain
all rights to the first edition of the competing texts
during a year since the deadline of the contest.
7. The decision of the jury is final and will be
announced on May, 2004.
8. Participation in the contest implies acceptance of
these rules.
